Reading Info

Reading is a huge component in the 1st grade classroom.  This is a huge growth year and reading impacts every learning area: science, social studies, math, etc.  The components of a balanced literacy approach are as follows: the read aloud, guided reading, shared reading, interactive writing, shared writing, Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop and Word study. Amazingly we try to squeeze all this in every day!  If you look at our schedule, you will see in the mornings that we cover shared reading, reading workshop (guided reading/centers), and word work.  Then in the afternoons, we do read aloud and writing workshop.

I also encourage reading at home for pleasure.  Reading 20 minutes a day will increase each student's vocabulary and experience.  The Lit Bags that the students bring home each week will help provide new reading material each week.
