OFFICIAL MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION

SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 2 - LARAMIE COUNTY, WYOMING

October 13, 2008

 

The Laramie County School District No. 2 board meeting was held at Carpenter Elementary School, Carpenter, Wyoming on October 13, 2008.

 

CALL TO ORDER

Chairman Tom Hirsig called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

 

ROLL CALL

Members Present –Sue Anderson, Patty Epler, Todd Fornstrom,

Toby Kimzey, Jeff Kirkbride, Tom Hirsig, Ty Lerwick, Tom Morgan,

and Margie Simineo   

 

Members Absent – Ty Lerwick  

 

Also Present – Benjamin Cossel, Mark Basham, Jeff Basham,

Julianne Randall, Esther Davison, Wayne Johnson, Diana Wedl,

Kathryn Schwandner, Becky Orr, Jack Hockersmith, Nicki

Hockersmith, Laurie Bahl, Merle Smith and Jeaneane Parsons 

 

APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA

The Superintendent added 5.2 (transportation) to the agenda and also “sale of property” to

the executive session.                        

Motion:         Toby Kimzey moved to accept the consent agenda

                      as modified.  (see attached)                   

Second:         Tom Morgan seconded the motion. 

Vote:             Motion carried.  

 

TEACHER OF THE YEAR RECOGNITION

Diana Wedl, an elementary teacher at West Elementary, was honored as Teacher of the Year. 

She is currently teaching 6th grade, but previously taught 4th grade.  Diana shared with the

Board various aspects of what she learned while studying for her master’s degree, the most

important being:  Read to your kids!  Read to your kids!  Read to your kids!    

 

FINANCIAL REPORT

We are currently through 33.33% of the fiscal year.  The general fund expenditures total is

85.67% of budgeted amount including encumbrances, 19.59% expended to-date. 

 

ENROLLMENT UPDATE

Our enrollment is currently at 841.  The Superintendent’s Advisory Committee will be

studying the reasons why enrollment has declined.  

 

TRANSPORTATION REPORT

Jerry Bowman, Transportation Coordinator, gave a full report to the Board at the Committee

of the Whole meeting on Wednesday evening.  Mr. Smith made available to the board a

notebook with routes and information pertaining to the transportation department.    

 

RESIGNATIONS

Two resignations were received from Bill Metzger and Joey Vossler. 

 

NEW CLASSIFIED STAFF

New employees are Jill Lerwick as a sub bus driver, Christine Girmus as a sub teacher and

Sue Mills as a bus paraprofessional. Mike Romsa was hired as the Jr. High wrestling

coach in Burns. 

 

PATRON COMMENTS

Mick Branigan asked if Tom Hirsig, chairman of the board, was moving to Gillette. 

Mr. Hirsig assured him that what he heard was a rumor and he has no plans to move.          

 

EXECUTIVE SESSION

Motion:           Todd Fornstrom made a motion to go in to executive session at

7:24 p.m. to discuss personnel and sale of property.

Second:           Tom Hirsig seconded the motion.

Vote:               Motion carried.

Motion:           Todd Fornstrom made a motion to reconvene the meeting at

 9:02 p.m. 

Second:           Tom Morgan seconded the motion.

Vote:               Motion carried. 

 

TRANSPORTATION

Mr. Smith handed out photos of parked buses at West Elementary and Burns High School

 to help Board members understand the request to waive the eight-way lights in certain

circumstances such as this.  The request came because of confusion by individuals not

knowing if they should stop or not.  After discussion, the Board decided to continue to

abide by the state statutes. 

 

IMPORTANT DATES

October 23 – Celebration of PAWS scores and TAP with Dr. McBride at

Albin Elementary – 10:00 a.m.

November 5 – COW – 7:00 p.m. at Central Office

November 10 – Board Meeting at 7:00 p.m. at Pine Bluffs High School

November 19 – 21 – Annual WSBA Conference – Casper

April 17-19 – Annual TAP Conference in LA

 

Motion:           Todd Fornstrom moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:10 p.m.

            Second:                       Toby Kimzey seconded the motion.

            Vote:               Motion carried and meeting adjourned.
